Or maybe not?
It’s sentimental Thursday!
I can’t remember what got me on this kick this morning, looking up photos of one of my old favorite record stores back home, but something did.
It most likely started with a fuck the digital culture rant. How all of our physical media is disappearing and all we’re left with is screens.
I miss the record store culture. You knew the guy behind the counter, you knew the kid restocking the racks and the kid that always seemed to be sitting in the far right hand corner with head phones on, who never spoke but nodded his head on occasion.
You’d get your coffee and dive in. Looking for old, new, rare, used, signed or nothing in particular. Sampling tracks from new bands or checking to see what the quality of that live album was like.
You could have an in depth conversations about all of the above and brag about the demo tape you scored years ago when a band was still underground and how you’d have to bring it in for them to tape next time. That’s right, I said tape. I’m getting old.
And with all of that said, I feel bad for the iTunes generation. The digital age that will be cheated of such experiences. The generation that won’t sit in front of their stereo or with their headphones on, looking over the booklet in the jewel case, reading the lyrics along with the music.
But like my friend Luc said, they’ll still enjoy Rock & Roll, just in a different way then we did.
And he’s right.
But me, I’m still stuck in the elitist mindset of that of John Cusack’s character in the movie, High Fidelity. The physical to me is still superior and I feel bad for those that will never be able to truly relate to that cinematic masterpiece.
But like all the generations before me, I’m not the first to rant on the change in technology. So for now, this Bitch will put a sock in it and go back to her daily activities…
