Freedom.
Well, here in America, we’ve got that shit in spades. And we piss on it all the time.
And sometimes set it on fire. We toss the baby out with the bathwater and make deals with the Devil we know we can’t keep.
While we cry out that we don’t have enough, it’s actually that very thing that we’re turning our noses up at.
Giving someone who looks “different” or “funny” a shitty look or discriminating against them because of it, is pissing on freedom.
Because it’s that freedom, (that we all clearly want), that allows us to all be different and express ourselves.
That’s why we’re not all wearing a uniform or covered from head to toe in rags. We have the opportunity to become whatever we want and there are even programs set up to help us get there.
Just because someone chooses a less than square occupation or look, doesn’t make them any less influential or better or worse.
The world needs all types. And while all the types might not be our types; we shouldn’t sneer at them or trip them up.
I don’t give the squares crooked looks, nor should they give me the, “well fuck you” face.
Imagine the world without one or the other. Creative and non. It would either be a very boring, stale place or a god damn free for all. A stable mix of it all is clearly what’s best.
That’s the American Dream isn’t it? Equality and freedom for all?
I came up with this horse shit last night while I was out for work.
A man in a very bland suit (no judgement), looked at me, made a noise as if he may or may not throw up, while jerking his head around into a disgusted look.
I looked at my friend who was standing next to me.
“I guess he hates the American Dream.”
My friend looked at me screwy, “What? Big tits and tattoos?”
“Yep.”
What that guy hated in me, was one of the key things he was surely trying to protect by voting in a few weeks, something he felt strongly about. Freedom.
But people like their freedom their way. They don’t’ care so much for other people’s or really give a shit if they have it or not for that matter.
Which is evident in that asshole’s actions. He was clearly upset with my appearance and choices and that’s fine, but keep it to yourself, Sally. It’s not 1959 and we don’t all wear grey.
You don’t have to like everyone’s choice of freedom, but you don’t have to piss on it either.
And I’m not perfect, I have to remind myself this shit all of the time. Especially when it comes to mimes…my god.
