Me too.
So don’t worry.
I’m not a total dick and I don’t think we should all be cheated out of our gifts and celebrating. I actually love buying gifts for people. It’s my favorite part of holiday, that and seeing their faces when they open them.
But this year was a little different for me. Me and mine here in New York, all suffered some kind of set back this year, hurricane and other assorted issues. The city actually felt more subdued this season. It was quieter and the emphasis wasn’t on the parties or the presents, but on time spent.
I spent Christmas in the city, opting out of flying home; due to my impending work load.
I did think for a second or five; that I may end up spending the holidays alone. Having most of my friends coupled off or traveling. I of course wasn’t thrilled, but I wasn’t going to cry about it either.
As the universe would have it, I ended up surrounded by friends, having two full days of what I now realize is what the holidays are supposed to be about.
I had two nights of great dinners with friends, laughed more than I have in a long time and just enjoyed the shit out of myself, simply spending time with people I cared about.
The time spent was more valuable to me than anything I’ve ever received. I can’t remember the last time I had such an awesome holiday.
The people I’ve chose to keep in my life are truely amazing; and there isn’t anything better than that.
So thanks economic hardship and natural disasters. You gave me a Christmas way more valuable than I would have otherwise experienced; had everything not gone haywire.
I’m truly grateful and I’ll never quit believing that everything happens for a fucking reason.
Time is way more valuable than material shit. Memories last forever and nothing can ever take those away. (Except for disease I know, but I was trying to be sentimental, Jesus).
So lesson learned. And what a pleasant one it was.
Don’t worry, I’ll be back to being crotchety tomorrow…
