Speculate, Swoon, Squash.
This is what we as a human race do to all things new and different.
Large or little, extreme or minor.
If it looks, walks or talks differently than we’re used to, the speculating starts.
What is it? Where did it come from? I wonder what it feels like? Is it like everything/everyone else? Should I like it?
Then the swooning starts. Either publicly or privately. Usually privately if it’s still in the speculation stage, society wise. No one can know you like it, it might be bad! But damn, you do like it, drawn to it. Turned on by it.
It’s weird and you want it.
Now here’s the thing.
Something that’s new, different, weird, odd, what have you; is probably not going to react the way you want it to.
The abnormal is not going to adhere to your “normal”.
And as humans, that pisses us off.
The old, “well, I accepted you, you’re a freak and I like you, why don’t you want me?’
This is how the squashing begins.
It refuses to fit an emotional mold or the norm mold you’ve tried to cram it in. ”I know you want to wear those leather boots but why not try on these loafers, it’s all for your benefit…” said with a smile.
But when the gesture is rejected, because the “freak” doesn’t want the loafers, or to bend you over and fuck you silly or be paraded around as your “freak” friend, the new and different is squashed.
The missiles are fired and it’s adios to originality and individuality.
Because the human population in general; hates different.
HATES.
It makes them nervous. Makes them question what they’re doing. They become jealous that they themselves don’t have the balls to stand out. Why can’t everything just be the same and we all get along?
That’s not how life works unfortunately.
Speculate, Swoon, Squash.
As people, the best we can do is to appreciate the different. Embrace it. Don’t try to change it or change into it. Don’t obsess over it or become jealous of it. Just accept it or them. Regardless of what or who it is. Then we as a whole can quit destroying and squashing the new, the oddly beautiful, the eccentric and the weird.
For a solid example of this, watch the movie, Edward Scissorhands. Watch it and you’ll see exactly what I’m talking about. And it’s a rad holiday movie as well.
So let’s try not to stomp out the New and Different in this coming New Year. Please.
