What makes a writer great? I have no fucking idea to be honest. How anything anyone writes is taken on a subjective level. So…who’s to say?
For me, I determine a great writer by what moves me. By how they string a sentence together. If I stop and underline it, reread it. It reads like a song, comes alive and I fall in love with it. Thompson, Cave, Robbins and Sedaris all do that for me.
I know that to become a decent writer, one must keep up with it. Write everyday. Keep one’s voice strong.
Also, speaking of strength… A strong sense of self-loathing also seems to help as well as not giving a fuck what anyone says. Writing for one’s self and no one else. Not targeting an audience, just creating.
Which is all I’m capable of.
People have told me what to write to hit a market. How to become more digestible. How to be more comfortable and how to write less screwy. Literally, all of those things.
I could give a shit.
I write what I want and how I want. My response to those people who criticize and have friendly suggestions on how I can be more palatable is a hearty, “fuck yourself,” and the suggestion that they no longer read my words.
Bam. Adios.
Wether I’m ever considered a great or not, I don’t care. I only care about being true to myself. Writing my words in my own fashion. No guidelines.
This sheep doesn’t fall in line.
