A revelation I came upon and one I always share with those close to me or those seeking my help is that of the curse of the creative.
As a creative person we see more. We feel more. Our senses are heightened. Almost like a superpower, (that idea gives some of you out there a hard on doesn’t it?).
Now because of this, we may feel crazy. Be plagued by anxiety, depression, angst or stress.
It’s hard enough to experience life from a bland perspective but from a heightened one, forget about it.
This causes more feelings and those feelings cause anxiety which can lead to sadness, anger or fear.
Then it’s how we deal with it. Sex, drugs, alcohol, self-defeating, self-harming behaviors ring a bell?
The road of the creative is no easy one. And half of us tend to be nomads, never wanting to be held down or forced to stay in one place or stuck inside a set of rules.
So. Lots of fallout in exchange for such gifts.
Think of yourself and think of all of the creative people you know. Out of those, who do you know that has it easy? Never struggles with substance abuse, self-loathing or self-defeating behaviors? Overwhelming anxiety or stress? And I’m not saying all of these, I’m saying one or more.
And on that note, what’s one to do?
Keep your head straight, keep focused and set your self on the path to progress and success by your own hand. Self-employment seems to work the best for the ambling creative. It leaves options open.
When you start to beat yourself up about feeling bad, crazy, anxious or for partaking in self-defeating behaviors; check yourself. Is that shit getting you anywhere? Probably not.
You can’t help how you feel. But you can help how you deal with feeling a certain way. Try dropping the drugs, booze and self-defeating shit and think about where it comes from. Why you’re doing it.
Life is hard. Seeing, feeling and experiencing is tough shit; but powering through it is what makes us. And it’s through powering through it, that we can create our best work.
So make something out of the shitty feelings. Don’t typecast yourself as crazy for feeling that way. Acknowledge it and move past it. Easier said than done, yes.
But next time you’re feeling shitty or feeling weird; get up. Get up from where you are and start doing something. Something toward your goal of getting more on top of your creative career and down your creative path.
Your head will quiet and the peace will come. Trust me.
