For the non; those subjected to their “charms” - it can be infuriating.
The ignorant say and do shit that to us is unacceptable. Fucked up and sometimes highly inappropriate and offensive.
They know not what they do, (I’m speaking of the true ignorant here, not the one’s pretending in order to get away with being a dick).
So what’s to be done about ignorance and the ignorant?
Should they be smacked, tripped, cursed at or calmly corrected?
Probably the last.
Ignoring them just perpetuates their ignorance. They’ll then think that whatever it was they said is acceptable and repeat the behavior.
Sure, confrontation blows; but do you want to do your part in stopping said bullshit or do you want to continue to get annoyed?
Let’s do a Top 5.
Ignorant Shit Said To Me & What’s To Be Done About It
1) A girl saw me dressed up in a McQueen 3/4 length black dress and hair pulled up in a bun. I was dressed moderately conservative, (looking past the side boob)…
Anyway, she walked up to me, introduced herself, (she dressed the models), and proceeded to shake my hand and tell me how great it was to see a woman covered in tattoos taking care of herself and being so confident. She said this in a Marsha Brady voice and there was a level of shock that I wasn’t embarrassed to be out in public, arms out.
Now was this girl being an asshole? No. She was just ignorant. She didn’t know that she was stereotyping and typecasting. I replied thank you and informed her that not all tattooed ladies were shameful derelicts and sometimes we wore nice things. Needless to say she got it.
2) This has happened more than once, too many times to count. Someone trying to get my attention with a “yo” or a “hey”. I’m not an animal and yelling at me like that will get zero response. If eye contact is made and I’m in a situation where I have to speak to said yeller, I’ll walk up to them and say that I don’t care to respond or converse with people who try to get my attention like they would a dog; then walk away. Works every time.
3) If I’m browsing in a store the last fucking thing I want to do is talk to strangers. A stranger comes up to me and speaks, asks me a question about the makeup I’m wearing, then the makeup I’m looking at. I ignored them. I guess their mother didn’t teach them not to talk to strangers and that if you’re ignored, go away. The pursuer kept on and I look over slowly and said, “I don’t care to talk to strangers, I’m busy.” The kid said something about being a rude bitch and I informed him that he had come over to me, I had not come over to him and told him to go fuck himself. He got quiet and walked away.
4) The most common “shocker” is when people will come up to me and touch me. Grab my arm or hand. I have to tell them it’s not okay to touch me. Ask first and the answer will still be no. Just because I have pictures on me doesn’t make that shit right. The “Ohhh, ok” look then washes over their face.
5) People who stare. Nobody likes to be stared at. If it goes on longer than 5 minutes, I usually just walk over and in a very low and creepy voice, inform them it’s not polite to stare and walk away. Scary and effective.
So there you have it. 5 simple effective and non-violent solutions to counteract ignorance. Try them out and save us all the future headache.
