If we’re not ourselves, then who the fuck are we?
Someone else? Or trying to be? Because that never works.
Or are we covering up who we are with clothes not fitting to how we feel? We make ourselves look and act a certain way because we feel that’s what “everybody” wants?
Well fuck that shit.
Seriously, why torture yourself into an existence that doesn’t “feel” right?
What do I mean feel right?
Don’t you have a favorite shirt or get up that makes you feel awesome, you feel it suits you? There’s a hairstyle and if female, makeup to match. You feel like yourself.
And this is a feeling you can’t force, it comes from your gut.
For example:

If I wore any of the above crap, I’d feel like a total turd. A poser. Like I didn’t belong. That would ultimately fuck up my mood and ruin my day. I can’t imagine having to spend long amounts of time in this (what I consider) garbage. Miserable! And who wants that?
Now…
Throw my fancy ass in this gear:
Now…
Throw my fancy ass in this gear:
And I feel right at home. That “feels right” feeling washes over me. This is me. And I’ll be honest, I own most of the above. I just can’t help myself with this designer…
So what am I? Punk/goth/chic? Nope. I’m just Kate. This is what I like, this is who I am.
People joke with me about how I’ll like wearing a white dress should I ever get married. I always respond, informing the person that I’ll be married in a black dress and black moto boots. Why not? That’s what I’m comfortable in! I’ll go in the ground the same way.
I’ve been like this since I was a kid and if I feel comfortable, why do anything different?
And what was my other point…oh, yes, that old chestnut… Trying to be someone else.
Listen, we all like leather jackets (or I think we should), but when is it taken too far?
What about if you see a shirt your friend has and you want it? Can you get it?
I’d suggest asking first, especially if it’s something unique. This just keeps you from looking like a creep.
But what is the fine line?
That line, I believe is when you change “who you are”. When you change your whole sense of style. You transform, a 180 degree difference from your previous norm. Now the transformation I’m referring to, isn’t original. It’s a deliberate change in order to look like someone else. And maybe that’s it. It’s just surface. But usually the copy cat wants a piece of the original wearer’s personality.
This has happened to me a few times and it creeps me out. Maybe you like what I’m wearing. Get down with your bad self. But are you sure you want to go from wearing polka dots to all black?
And why does your hair and makeup look like mine now? What happened to your pink lipstick?
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery; but if it’s not you, don’t do it!
You can admire something while still remaining true to yourself.
But maybe you were wearing something like the first picture and it’s not you, so you grab all the shit from the second picture and have a revelation. You’ve finally found yourself! Then, no problem.
It’s fine to get ideas from others, just don’t try to be someone else.
Be yourself. Be happy in your own skin, let that be what it may. Rock whatever the fuck you want and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
Be true to you and you’ll be one happy camper. There’s no better feeling.
