Words are one of the most powerful things delivered in this physical world, dealt by the tongue. Aside from action itself, which comes from the physical body and mind. But almost always, words proceed action itself, so it is paramount in our lives that we know the meaning of the words we say and the weight the carry.
Four very important ones, ones commonly confused and misunderstood are the following four. All taken from Wikipedia.
Compassion is the feeling of empathy for others. Compassion is the emotion that we feel in response to the suffering of others that motivates a desire to help.
Empathy is the capacity to recognize emotions that are being experienced by another sentient or fictional being. One may need to have a certain amount of empathy before being able to experience accurate sympathy or compassion.
Apathy (also called perfunctoriness) is most commonly defined as a lack of feeling, emotion, interest, or concern. It is a state of indifference, or the suppression of emotions such as concern, excitement, motivation, and/or passion. An apathetic individual has an absence of interest in or concern about emotional, social, spiritual, philosophical and/or physical life and the world.
Sympathy (from the Greek words syn"together" and pathos "feeling" which means "fellow-feeling") is the perception, understanding, and reaction to the distress or need of another human being.[1] This empathic concern is driven by a switch in viewpoint, from a personal perspective to the perspective of another group or individual who is in need. Empathy and sympathy are often used interchangeably. Sympathy is a feeling, but the two terms have distinct origins and meanings.[2] Empathy refers to the understanding and sharing of a specific emotional state with another person. Sympathy does not require the sharing of the same emotional state. Instead, sympathy is a concern for the well-being of another. Although sympathy may begin with empathizing with the same emotion another person is feeling, empathy can be extended to other emotional states.
These words all have a commonality and when one is used, one will follow.
The biggest confusion is empathy and sympathy. Commonly confused as above. In some sense, sympathy is rather useless and while not a completely empty sentiment, it means we may not understand the emotion the individual is experiencing.
Feeling sorry for someone and leaving it at that does no good, although it can be enough, but rarely have I found that.
Now, as I stated in the beginning some do not know the meaning of these words. If someone has a death, loss, horrible situation, the natural response would be that you are truly sorry for their situation and feel for them - empathy is there but not said. In this scenario, if the immediate response is that you are empathetic for their situation, someone not quite understanding the true meaning might not understand. They may take it as cold or even narcissistic; like, "oh, now it’s about you."
An I’m sorry is appropriate in these situations, and then if you do understand, which giving someone relief in knowing they are not alone, one can then, (if they have experienced a similar situation), can say they empathize with them. That they are not alone and their feelings are validated. This can give great comfort to an individual after the correct introduction of words is used. This is where compassion comes in, one cannot be truly empathetic without a sense of compassion.
Now, I will get to apathy in a second, in relation to my personal self.
As you can see, words carry a large weight and can be used in many different situations.
For my future occupation, I need and have the first three. My life has been a long one and I have no use for just sympathy in all of my experience. But I use the word as needed as stated above.
In going into Private Investigation, it was my compassion and empathy for the innocent that lead me down this path. My inner self, my intuition guided me there and I know that with all of my turmoil and negative situations in my life, it’s time to do some good, make something of it. To rid the world of the truly dark ones that prey on innocent victims. Such as those evading the laws for crimes committed, unsolved cases, (usually murder and missing persons), pedophiles, rapists and domestic cases where a person has been betrayed in a relationship.
For those that I will be hunting there is a deep rooted sense of apathy - and that will never change. One can not feel a shred of compassion for those that have committed the above. It will interfere and cause possible apprehension, in their hunting and capturing. And true predators do not deserve anything but apathy. They lost that right at the moment they chose to harm an innocent.
Now- in apathy things can get messy, it can go overboard. We don’t have feel bad for the true dark ones, but control must be used. There must be a balance of scales. As much as one would want to stomp a pedophile’s face in; that is going beyond. They will get their own through karma and let's be honest; prison.
Control and understanding the words listed above is key in everyone’s lives and imperative in my work. My apathy towards the offenders does not mean I wish them ill will, nor want to become a brutal monster, that makes me no better than they, but an apathetic nature is imperative to getting a case solved.
Through meditation I can feel compassion once the case is solved and they are put away and the correct action is completed. Empathy for their broken minds and souls and wish for their turning it all around. Now rarely does one as dark as those types turn around, but there is no reason not to ask the universe for the best.
Empathy and compassion, sincere empathy and compassion is needed for the victims and must be shown with care.
These words must all be understood in life for they are all needed in this life. One must just be careful with apathy. Used in the wrong way takes one into the dark and can change one into the predator. It’s a delicate one and must be used only in imperative situations. And in normal life, one different from my own, it’s a good one to try to rid one’s self of. It’s not a good one to hold onto and freezes our hearts and minds. A life lacking apathy if one can avoid it leads to true happiness.
Our words lead us to action most times, just make sure you fully understand the meaning of what is delivered. And that goes beyond just the list in this blog.
It all goes back to the wise saying, “think before you speak.”
And with that, I’ll shall leave you with your thoughts and digestion of the material above.
Let your lives be full of happiness and bliss.
Blessed Be.
